Tipping to Winter

When I think back on the many times I have photographed Augie and Aida outdoors over the years, it occurs to me that it's always C-O-L-D!  39° in this most recent session, but we are hardy Vermonters, after all, and we found some leftover leaves and beautiful settings.  Their Lab pup Jake wasn't bothered at all and we were able to spend enough time outside to get these beautiful images.

Jason ~ MMU 2012

Wow!  We really lucked out in late October after weeks of wind and rain!  There were beautiful leaves left for Jason's senior portrait.

Would you believe it was raining before, during and after this session?  I'm glad no one else had a camera to get a shot of me and my Nikon under a silver reflector during the worst of it!

Jason kept his cool, though, and we got some great images.

Virginia & Nicole

I photographed Virginia and Nicole's wedding on a recent beautiful day at the Moose Meadow Lodge in Duxbury.  They were such a fun-loving couple and had traveled up to Vermont from Virginia to get married in the beautiful Green Mountains.

Their families came, too, and the ceremony and celebration were electric!  As they said in their vows, they never thought they would be able to share this day.  I'm so proud of Vermont!  Check out the video album:

Laura ~ CVU 2012

We've had great luck with the weather so far this week.

When I met with Laura it was mild with beautiful light everywhere.  She's so relaxed and confident, a joy to photograph.

I've actually known Laura since our first session when she was just a baby, not that I have grown any older, you understand.  But Laura has certainly changed and it's all good!

If you know Laura, call now for your senior portrait appointment and you'll get 16 FREE wallets.

Olivia ~ CVU 2012

Olivia!  Graceful and beautiful, despite the hot humid day of our session.  We beat the thunderstorms predicted all afternoon and captured the late summer golden light.  Just check out her video clip below:

Grace ~ Colchester 2012

Amazing eyes, don't you think?  Grace was photographed on my favorite kind of day ~ high overcast, not too hot, soft beautiful light everywhere.  The day seemed to suit Grace's calm personality, too.  She wore the perfect colors to accent her eyes and we had a great time traipsing around Charlotte for these gorgeous images.

Emily ~ Essex 2012

Friday was such a beautiful day to photograph Emily.  Not too hot, great light everywhere...I went a little crazy and have no idea how she'll choose from all the gorgeous shots!

Another cool thing is that I photographed Emily's parents' wedding and some of her portraits as a little kid.  She's such a lovely and confident person today ~ check out her video clip below:

Trooper

RenĂ©e and Chip brought over their sparkling Lab pup Trooper for a session on Thursday.  He was a happy bundle of energy!

We had great dog weather - not too hot, nice shade.  Photographing a black dog in the sun is like digging a hole at the beach - you know, it keeps disappearing, filled up with water.

Trooper kept his cool and was a very GOOD DOG.  He got to chew on sticks, jump and play and we all had a good time.

He even held his perfect Lab head
still for a profile shot!

How handsome it that?

Thomas ~ CVU 2012

I've known Thomas a long time and have photographed him and his family many times over the years.

One of the best parts of my job is watching children grow into relaxed and confident people, so it was great to reconnect the other day.

Thomas is thinking about college and gearing up for a great senior year at CVU.   He's busy working this summer at Shelburne Shipyard and likes to be out on the lake so we did part of our session by the water in Charlotte.

If you know Thomas, let me know when you book your senior portrait.  You'll get 16 free wallets with your order and he'll get 8.   Call now to reserve your session ~ 425-4242.

Family Time

Meet the Holman family from Bryn Mawr, PA.  Mia and Jim like to spend time at Basin Harbor in the summer with daughters Mary Kate and Laura.  This year they brought along their Golden Doodle Sebastian - "Sea Bass" - a fun loving pup with loads of personality.  Mary Kate has graduated from college and is off to a new job and apartment  and the family wanted to mark this milestone year with an updated portrait.

We had a wonderful session and I know they'll look back happily on their 2011 Vermont vacation!

Summer Bronze

This portrait from my archives SO makes me think of summer!

Jill, Maverick and Richie came in a few years ago, but whenever I look at it I think of happy and carefree sunny days.

The boys remind me of my own brothers, shirtless and barefoot until September.  I love the beautiful golden skin tones and sun bleached hair.

This makes me smile and appreciate how a captured moment can live on in our hearts.

One of my favorite activists

Yes, there was a life before photography - it was called high school!  I recently reconnected with the outrageous David Schein who loves to shake up the comfortable.  He's an actor and writer who's back in Vermont and is currently director of the Willowell Foundation in Monkton.

David has performed all over the world and one project dear to his heart is MYethiOPIA, his one man performance of tales from the One Love Aids Education Circus.  You can read about a recent show here.

David is a force of nature, dramatic and hilarious at the same time.   I hope I captured some of his intensity in these photographs.  His beautiful daughter Aurora came along so I photographed her, as well.  They are the best of friends and I think it shows.

Back from NEIPP

I attended the New England Institute of Professional Photography last week and had a wonderful time, both in and out of class.  I studied with two great fine art photographers from Michigan and learned lots of new techniques.  I am looking forward to the end of "mud season" to get out and photograph just for fun.

Meanwhile, I did a portrait of my friend Joyce at the hotel (since it rained most of the time on beautiful Cape Cod...).  I love it.  Doesn't she look gorgeous?

Khila & Kaleb

I met Khila (age 9 months) while photographing babies at the mall - a fundraiser for The Children's Miracle Network.  Her Mom brought her in to the studio after that and I have watched Khila and her brother Kaleb grow into lovely children.  They are Irish step dancers, so it was pretty cool that they came in on St. Patrick's Day this year!

I thoroughly enjoyed photographing nearly-grown-up Khila and fun loving Kaleb today.  Erin Go Bragh!

Classic Style

I had such a wonderful time photographing my friend Kathy and her beautiful daughter Rachel.  We laughed throughout the session and, since they brought white blouses, I tried to recreate the feeling of a classic high key portrait style I have always liked.

I love the result and it reminds me of a photograph my mother had taken when she became engaged in 1946 - by Bradford Bachrach, of the famous Bachrach Studios in New York.

I think black and white portraits are still some of the most compelling photographs to look at and retain their universal appeal in the age of instant access photography.

Let's Pretend!

I have photographed sweet Ellen, age 4,  for several years now and on her last visit to the studio she decided to wear some of her pretty princess dresses.  We played and she twirled, it was a joy to watch her!  Doesn't every little girl dream of this?  Thank you, Ellen, for making our session so much fun.

A Celebration

The First Congregational Church of Burlington is saying goodbye to the Reverend Bob Lee who has served their community for 18 years.  I attended a celebration of his ministry on Saturday and witnessed a wonderful afternoon of remembrance, love, respect and laughter.  The chapel was packed with friends who came to show their appreciation for Bob and his wife Donna.

There were gifts from the community and Sunday school classes, a slide show, music, great food, some tears and much affection.

I was privileged to have been asked to create a portrait of Bob to hang with those of other former ministers at the church.  It was wonderful to be invited to see the portrait unveiled and to see where it will be displayed.  I enjoyed working with Bob and Donna and I think his character and vitality are evident in the image.
